Academy of Tucson is proud of our ‘A’ average rating for our district and for our close-knit community of dedicated teachers and staff. We are launching a series of profiles about team members from all three of our Academy of Tucson public charter schools – Elementary, Middle and High School. Read on to learn about one of the educators making our small schools creative and caring.
Ms. Omaris Maldonado-Torres, Director of Music, Academy of Tucson High School
In her role as Director of Music at Academy of Tucson High School, Ms. Maldonado-Torres cultivates a positive learning environment while challenging her students to be the best people and musicians they can be.
Ms. Maldonado-Torres empowers her students through music. In her classes, students celebrate different cultures, embrace a growth mindset and explore how music engages the brain more fully.
Ms. Maldonado-Torres teaches Advanced Women's Choir, Mixed Choir, Guitar Ensemble, Chamber Guitar Ensemble, Men's Ensemble, Women's Pop, Jazz Combo, and Music Appreciation. All of her ensembles perform biannually and AOTHS students can audition for other local choirs, including the University of Arizona Honor Choir.
Music exposure, appreciation, and participation can improve test scores and create a more well-rounded person. And the many awards for the Academy of Tucson High School musicians are proof of Ms. Maldonado-Torres’s tireless dedication to her teaching craft. Her Advanced Women’s Choir repeatedly wins the highest rating at the different festivals and concerts they travel to each year.
