Growing up in Tucson, in a family of teachers, Academy of Tucson Kindergarten teacher Julie Newsham realized a career in education was pretty much inevitable. Mrs. Newsham, a beloved, five-year member of our elementary faculty, earned a 4.0 for her master’s in education degree from NAU! And after 17 years shoveling Flagstaff snow, she was ready to return home to Tucson. Before she was an Academy of Tucson teacher, Mrs. Newsham was an Academy of Tucson parent. Her two daughters attend the school, in fifth and sixth grades now.
Mrs. Newsham wanted to teach at Academy of Tucson for the same reasons that drew her to the school as a parent; she feels very fortunate to have found a small, close-knit community school where excellence in education and character development are emphasized and supported by parents and teachers alike.
Growing up, Mrs. Newsham attended nearby schools and was active in 4H, school band, and choir. In her role as kindergarten teacher at the Academy of Tucson, Mrs. Newsham focuses on supporting the whole child and introducing her students to a unique and diverse curriculum, fostering a lifelong love of learning. Academy of Tucson Elementary School joins Mrs. Newsham on this mission by creating a school community full of opportunities. Kindergarteners join all the Academy of Tucson Elementary School students at fun events inside the classroom and out. A sampling of these include: Grandparent’s Breakfast, Kind Kids, Science Fun Fest, book fairs and school carnivals.
